Church Songs
We all have that song we get excited about when the band starts playing it in church. There’s nothing more wonderful than hearing incredible church songs that have a deep meaning and an actionable message that we can take with us into the world.
While we live in a sexualized world full of vulgar music, it’s important that we stick to our roots and empower others to do this as well through religious music. If you know someone who is feeling down or needs encouragement or someone who simply loves great Christian music, the church songs we are going to talk about in this article are a great place to start.
1. Build My Life, Pat Barrett
This song starts off the list because it’s the epitome of praise. Build My Life talks about how Jesus really is the definition of love in a world full of hate. The song discusses how Jesus is the person most worthy of our praise and how it’s so important that we praise Him in everything we do.
He says:
“Jesus, the Name above every other name
Jesus, the only One who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for You,
Oh! We live for You”
Have you ever heard a song that just fills you with love and joy? That’s how I feel every time I hear this song. It’s a reminder that Jesus is the only one who could save us, and He did just that. He’s worthy of everything and it’s our job to praise Him and show Him that we care.
2. What a Beautiful Name, Hillsong Worship
Here we have another unbelievably beautiful song of praise for Jesus Christ. As I listen to the song I get goosebumps when they say “the name of Jesus Christ my king.”
“What a beautiful name it is
What a beautiful name it is
The name of Jesus Christ my King
What a beautiful name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a beautiful name it is
The name of Jesus”
I think the message behind this song is an encouragement to remember nothing can hold Jesus from us and nothing can hold back His love. Like the song says later on in further verses, death couldn’t hold Him, He has no rivals, no equal, now and forever, God reigns.
Jesus is a powerful name and a beautiful name. As you sing this song, keep in mind that you’re singing direct praise to Jesus.
3. This Is Amazing Grace, Phil Wickham
Next up we have another powerful song that really puts things into perspective for us as Christians. Sometimes we fail to fully understand our salvation. We get so caught up in our lives that we neglect to think about what Jesus did for us when He was crucified.
Jesus took our place. God sent him on a very precise mission to die for us so we didn’t have to suffer.
“Who breaks the power of sin and darkness?
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger?
The King of glory, the King above all kings
Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder?
And leaves us breathless in awe and wonder?
The King of glory, the King above all kings”
I mean, really take that in for a second. Who is the holiest? Who is the most righteous? Who is the King above all Kings? When you start to think about it, it makes you feel pretty small right?
Well, that’s amazing grace. No matter what we do in our lives, we’ll never be able to compare our actions to what Jesus Christ did. We might kid ourselves at times but when we hear music like this and start to actually reflect, we realize that we’re not even close to His glory.
4. 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord), Matt Redman
If this isn’t one of your favorite songs of all time I don’t know what could be. This song is literally the equivalent of screaming out “I LOVE YOU!” It’s an audible confession of your love and belief in Jesus Christ and it has a lot more meaning than you’d think.
“It’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again”
“I’ll worship Your Holy name
You’re rich in love
And You’re slow to anger
Your name is great
And Your heart is kind”
Once again, all of these words are meant to lift Jesus up and for us to realize how amazing our God is. This is us calling out saying, Lord, I worship You, respect You, and trust You.
5. Great Are You Lord, All Sons & Daughters
“You give life, You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope, You restore
Every heart that is broken
And great are You, Lord”
You want to talk about powerful lyrics? Just read these next lines outloud to yourself.
“It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It’s Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only”
Once again, the best Christian music doesn’t have to say anything new or complicated, but instead simply act as a form of worship and praise. That’s what this song does.
6. Who You Say I Am, Hillsong Worship
This song is a celebration of faith. As we walk through life, we have two primary choices. We can either walk with the light or with the darkness; God makes this very clear. There are no in-betweens and there are no take-backs once the final day comes.
“Who the Son sets free
Oh, is free indeed
I’m a child of God, yes, I am”
This is a celebration. The Son has set me free. I am free because I am a child of God. If you know this fact to be true in your heart, it’s cause for celebration! God has set you free – what a great thing to proclaim in song.
7. How Great Is Our God, Chris Tomlin
This song really speaks to the power of God. We’re all powerful when we have God on our side. Just think about it. He is the creator of all things. He’s in control, He’s guiding us, and He is ensuring that we live our life according to His perfect plan.
“He wraps himself in light
And darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice
Trembles at His voice”
Darkness tries to hide and trembles at His voice. Those are powerful but true lyrics.
8. Good, Good Father, Chris Tomlin
“Oh and I’ve seen many searching for answers far and wide
But I know we’re all searching for answers only You provide
‘Cause You know just what we need before we say a word”
We’re all looking for answers “only You provide.” Wow. Isn’t that the truth? Everyone wants to know everything, control everything, and have the utmost power but sometimes, we need to hand our problems and issues over to the Lord.
9. In Christ Alone, Stuart Townend, Brian Getty, Kristian Stanfill, Passion
“In Christ alone, my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ, I stand.”
This just about says it all. Our faith stands in Christ alone. Frankly, you can’t put your faith in anyone else because there’s only one person who will never let you down. That person is Christ.
10. Living Hope, Phil Wickham
“Who could imagine so great a mercy?
What heart could fathom such boundless grace?
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken, I am forgiven
The king of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior, I’m yours forever
Jesus Christ, my living hope”
I am obsessed with these lyrics. Who could have ever imagined a God so merciful that He would send His only son to die for our sins? Who could fathom such grace? Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf, we have salvation. Lord, I am yours. You are my living hope.
